The VallyVellum in Guingamp: A Monumental Steel-and-Fabric Canopy
Guingamp now features a striking new architectural landmark: the VallyVellum, a monumental steel-and-fabric canopy installed on the recently redesigned Place du Vally. This unique structure combines technical performance, aesthetics, and functionality—while enhancing the city’s appeal.
The VallyVellum is shaped like a 55-ton steel tripod, composed of three arches, each spanning 118 feet (36 meters). Rising 39 feet (12 meters) high, it creates a dramatic, airy silhouette that dominates the square.
Covered with a tensioned gray fabric membrane, the canopy extends over 13,940 sq ft (1,296 m²)—118 feet by 118 feet. Its lightweight and translucent roof floats above the public space, providing visual comfort and a strong architectural identity.
Designed as a multifunctional canopy, the structure—located near the bus station—now shelters the Vally parking area while creating a vibrant new public gathering space. With integrated lighting and sound systems, the VallyVellum can host a stage or accommodate a variety of cultural, festive, or community events.
Rainwater is efficiently collected via powder-coated steel gutters discreetly integrated into the structure, maintaining its sleek design.
Beyond its technical achievements, the VallyVellum reflects the city’s vision to reinvent Place du Vally as a modern, welcoming, and versatile public space. Both an architectural landmark and a functional facility, it reinforces Guingamp’s image as a dynamic city looking toward the future.
