A multisport canopy in Avignon in France : an open, connected and sustainable space

The city of Avignon has recently been equipped with a multisport canopy designed and built by SMC2. This new facility serves a clear and essential purpose: making everyday sports practice accessible to all through an open, functional structure that meets today’s needs.

The canopy stands out thanks to its lightweight and sustainable architecture:

• A double-curved roof covered with a tensioned membrane, ensuring pleasant natural light while protecting users from the weather

• Exposed timber frame (posts and beams), chosen for its low carbon footprint and architectural quality

• Galvanized steel rainwater downpipes for efficient drainage

• Railings and refined finishes to ensure safety and harmonious integration

• 300 Lux LED lighting, allowing sports activities to continue in the evening with optimal visibility

Designed as a shared sports facility, the canopy is equipped to host multiple disciplines:

• Handball goals

• Retractable side basketball hoops, freeing up space as needed

• An open-access area to encourage spontaneous, intergenerational use

To enhance the user experience, BoxUp connected lockers have also been installed.

These lockers allow users to borrow sports equipment for free, independently and easily via a mobile app.
This service encourages casual practice, especially for young people and families, even when they haven’t planned ahead.

This project perfectly reflects SMC2’s mission: to imagine open, sustainable, and well-equipped sports spaces that integrate into people’s daily lives while addressing environmental challenges.

With this new sports canopy, the city of Avignon offers its residents a space for connection, activity and wellbeing – freely and accessibly.
