Construction of a sports complex at the heart of the kawéni school zone on Mayotte Island: A versatile facility serving the youth of Mayotte

Located in the heart of the Kawéni school zone on Mayotte Island, SMC2 participated in the creation of a large-scale sports complex designed to be a central element for the school. This project addresses both climate challenges and the growing need for sports infrastructure in the region.

The complex includes several spaces dedicated to various sports:

  • A multi-sports gymnasium of 1,714 m² / 18,461 sq ft
  • A hall dedicated to table tennis, climbing, and combat sports, covering 879 m² / 9,464 sq ft
  • A sports pavilion
  • Covered walkways ensuring protected circulation
  • A central locker room area connecting the two sports buildings

Together, these form a cohesive, functional facility designed for intensive use in a school environment.

With its 50.00 m / 164 ft in length and 34.28 m / 112 ft in width, the gymnasium, a symbol of SMC2’s expertise in wood construction, provides an optimized playing area for multiple disciplines: handball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and badminton.

Technical Features:

  • Traditional wooden framework
  • Double-skin steel roofing
  • Wooden louvered facades promoting natural ventilation
  • EPDM sports flooring

Designed for Mayotte’s tropical climate, the building prioritizes ventilation and sun protection while ensuring comfort and durability.

The covered walkways (256.6 m² / 2,764 sq ft), which run along part of the building, are constructed with a wooden framework and a single-skin steel roof. These covered passages provide sheltered movement between different areas, an essential feature in Mayotte’s climate.

The second hall, covering 879 m² / 9,464 sq ft (40.32 m x 21.8 m / 132 ft x 72 ft) over two floors, houses:

  • A full-height climbing area with a dedicated climbing wall
  • A combat sports room with tatami mats
  • A space for table tennis practice

Technical Features:

  • Wooden framework with triangulated trusses for strength and stability
  • Double-skin steel roofing
  • Wooden louvered facades
  • Quartz concrete flooring

The two buildings are connected by a central area of 340.5 m² / 3,667 sq ft, constructed with traditional concrete over three levels, topped with a rooftop terrace. This area includes restrooms and locker rooms, ensuring smooth connectivity between the different zones.

This sports complex showcases SMC2’s expertise in creating sports facilities in tropical environments. Beyond its technical performance, the project represents a major investment for the youth of Mayotte, providing a modern, versatile, and secure venue that promotes sports participation, social cohesion, and youth development through sports.
